For the management of wastes from large scale industrial processes and the decision to either dispose or utilize these materials, information on their environmental properties is needed. Leaching tests have been developed to assess such properties, typically designed in relation to regulatory control rather than as instruments for waste management or improving material properties for reuse. This article discusses new methods designed to maximize benefits from understanding the systematic leaching behaviour of materials. It highlights that characterization information generated for specific wastes has broader applicability than current regulatory single-step leaching test data. Although more elaborate tests are costlier and time-consuming, there is a need for quick tests in process control. By positioning test data from quicker leaching procedures alongside more intricate characterization leaching procedures, the efficiency of regulatory data can be improved. The extended information generated provides a basis for predicting long-term leaching behaviour by enhancing our comprehension of release-controlling factors.
