Galvani's discovery provoked an animated debate that lasted for about a decade. This paper examines the discussion surrounding Luigi Galvani's treatise and highlights significant issues related to animal electricity that extend beyond the well-documented controversy between Galvani and Volta. By reviewing the early responses to Galvani's findings from 1791, the author seeks to illuminate the various interpretations of 'galvanic fluid' and its implications for nervous and muscular action. Key figures in this debate, such as Humboldt, contributed to the understanding that the nervous fluid involved in animal motion is complex, linking electricity with chemical processes. Additionally, while Galvani bolstered evidence for animal electricity, Volta introduced a new kind of artificial electricity that complicated these discussions. The research indicated that progress in electrophysiology was hampered not by resistance to the concept of animal electricity but by the absence of a physical foundation for these theories. Ultimately, the advancements in physics and chemistry during the 1840s paved the way for modern research in this field, suggesting a historical significance in the debates of the 1790s that was only fully appreciated decades later.
