Integrated Environmental Modelling (IEM) serves as a crucial mechanism for comprehending the intricate and dynamic ecosystems that sustain our natural resources and influence our environments. This paper aims to explore the impact of human behavior on the assembly and application of IEM in addressing societal challenges. The methodology includes identifying twelve cognitive biases that hinder the effectiveness of IEM, supported by personal observations and behavioral science findings. The results reveal that human biases are primarily shaped by experiential learning and are ill-suited for the diffuse problems that IEM often tackles. The study proposes a critical analysis process designed to account for represented and unrepresented processes, encouraging awareness of human biases. Additionally, recommendations are provided, such as establishing a new field within the behavioral biogeosciences and employing structured engagement with stakeholders in IEM. The article concludes that fostering an atmosphere of humility, open-mindedness, and transparency is essential for enhancing the resilience of IEM constructs and their applications.
