This document outlines the experiments conducted in the Metallography course for the academic year 2021-2022 at Muffakham Jah College of Engineering and Technology, specifically within the Mechanical Engineering Department. The objective is to provide mechanical engineering students with hands-on experience in metallographic studies of various materials, including low and medium carbon steel, grey cast iron, malleable cast iron, brass, and aluminum-silicon alloy. A series of carefully structured experiments are detailed, including the preparation and etching solutions required for effective microstructural analysis that adheres to ASTM and BS standards. Results from these experiments demonstrate the microstructures of different alloys, such as the appearance of eutectic mixtures in aluminum-silicon alloys and the properties associated with carbon content in cast iron. Through these practical exercises, students gain valuable insights into the relationships between material properties and processing techniques, reinforcing their understanding of metallurgical principles. Additionally, precautions and procedural instructions are highlighted to ensure safety and accuracy during experimentation.
