This document is a compiled digest of patents from 1974–1979 relating primarily to the Bayer process for alumina production, treatment of “red mud,” and other alkaline or ammonia leaching processes for ores. It summarizes US, Canadian, and British patents covering improved digestion of bauxite with sodium hydroxide, optimization of solids concentration, temperature, and flow conditions, and methods to reduce scaling and increase plant throughput. Several entries describe techniques for handling and valorizing red mud, including selective recovery of bound sodium, solidification of red mud with quaternary ammonium salts, and extraction of aluminum, iron, titanium, and sodium sulfate by acid or sulfate treatments. Other patents focus on process control, such as regulating seed surface area in precipitation, controlling sodium oxalate levels, and optimizing alumina/caustic ratios and lime additions for different bauxite mineralogies.
