Abstract

Language:

This study investigated the prereduction behavior of one of the Turkish laterite deposits, specifically the Sivrihisar laterite ore, which has a nickel content of 1.26%. Given its high iron content and low MgO composition, along with a low arsenic content, ferronickel smelting is identified as a suitable method for nickel extraction. The methodology involved reducing calcined laterite samples with the addition of coal in a laboratory-scale horizontal tube furnace under an argon atmosphere. The effects of temperature, time, and the amount of coal addition on the degree of reduction of nickel, iron, and cobalt were systematically studied. The findings reveal the optimal conditions for temperature, duration, and coal addition necessary for the prereduction of Sivrihisar laterites based on the specific particle size used in the experiments. This work contributes to expanding the current understanding of feasible nickel extraction processes from less-utilized ores, highlighting important parameters that facilitate efficient recovery strategies.
