Sustainability has emerged as a prevalent concept in environmental discourse, particularly in the mining industry, where it is often challenged. This paper aims to assess the sustainability of mining within the framework established by the Brundtland Commission, which defines sustainable development as meeting present needs without compromising future generations. The methodology involves a critical examination of the arguments against mining's sustainability, including the non-renewable nature of minerals and the irreversible environmental impacts associated with mining activities. It highlights the necessity of a balanced approach, where economic, social, and ecological aspects must be simultaneously addressed to achieve true sustainability. The results indicate that while mining does present challenges, it can be considered sustainable if the benefits outweigh the negative impacts, aligning with the broader definition of sustainable development. This analysis concludes that a tripartite approach, integrating economic viability, social equity, and ecological health, is essential for evaluating the sustainability of mining practices and promoting responsible resource management in the context of sustained development.
