Leaching is an important solid-liquid separation method that relies on the preferential solvation of solutes from solid mixtures into liquid solvents. The objective of this chapter is to present the principles of ideal leaching, outline the challenges associated with solid-liquid extraction, and describe the dynamics of solute diffusion through solids. The methodology includes a thorough examination of diffusion mechanisms, assumptions of ideal conditions, and system behaviors during the leaching stage. Key findings indicate that achieving equilibrium in leaching processes is complex due to the slow diffusion rates of solutes through solids, which impede complete separation of phases. The chapter further elaborates on the ideal leaching scenario where all solutes are extracted from the solid phase, yet highlights practical limitations in completely disengaging liquid and solid phases. These insights contribute to a deeper understanding of solid-liquid extraction processes and their applications in unit operations in engineering.
