This study investigates the leaching of copper from mineral deposits using fungal populations, particularly in environments where traditional bacterial leaching may not be effective due to a lack of sulfur and iron. The objective is to assess the solubilization capabilities of certain fungi isolated from tailing ponds and mine samples in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Methodologically, samples were collected from the White Pine Copper Company, and dominant fungal species were isolated and screened for their ability to solubilize copper from various sources in a nutrient medium. Results indicate that specific Penicillium fungi can solubilize copper efficiently under neutral to slightly acidic conditions through the release of metabolites that chelate copper ions. This research not only standardizes procedures for maximizing copper yields but also provides insight into the leaching process nature. The preliminary findings suggest that this biological approach to mineral extraction could have applications in the mining industry, though the economic feasibility of such processes remains uncertain.
