Abstract

Language:

Santiago is one of the most polluted capitals in the world, experiencing high levels of O3, CO, and particulate matter. This study aims to evaluate the performance of electric vehicles in a highly polluted urban environment characterized by heavy traffic and inadequate infrastructure. Methodologically, the research involves experimental driving tests conducted within Santiago to assess vehicle performance metrics, considering the city's unique geographical and climatic challenges that exacerbate air quality issues. The results indicate that electric vehicles may provide a viable alternative for reducing urban pollution and improving air quality in Santiago, which is impacted by both vehicular emissions and poor air renewal. The findings suggest that the integration of electric vehicles into the city's transportation framework could mitigate some environmental impacts associated with traditional combustion-engine vehicles. Overall, this study highlights the significance of exploring sustainable transportation options in polluted cities and emphasizes the urgent need for policies that promote electric vehicle adoption.
