Copper recovery via the Solvent Extraction (SX) process is a well-established technique for approximately 40 years, offering advantages such as low operational temperatures and high selectivity in metal purification. However, it suffers from limitations due to the use of volatile organic substances, large plant footprints, sensitivity to low temperatures, and ineffectiveness with low-grade solutions. In response to these challenges, the combined Ion Exchange (IX) and Solvent Extraction (SX) process, termed IX/SX, has been developed. This study reviews the main stages of the IX/SX process, demonstrating its effectiveness in recovering copper from a wide range of metal concentrations, low-grade solutions, and turbid feed solutions, without the need for large pre-filtration ponds. Key findings indicate that IX/SX technology enhances operational efficiency in winter, reduces organic losses, and minimizes plant sizes. A comprehensive technical comparison was conducted, highlighting the advantages of IX/SX as a purification and separation stage in the copper production process.
