Centreline macrosegregation is often observed in continuous slab casting of steel. This study aims to investigate the formation mechanisms of macrosegregation, specifically focusing on bulging and feeding. A two-phase volume averaging model that considers only columnar solidification is employed to simulate three different scenarios: (i) the influence of feeding flow during solidification without bulging, resulting in negative segregation at the center; (ii) the effect of bulging alone, leading to positive segregation; and (iii) a combined approach accounting for both shrinkage and bulging-induced flows. The results demonstrate that in the simulated casting conditions, the bulging effect predominates over the shrinkage effect, ultimately predicting positive centreline segregation. These findings enhance our understanding of the dynamics impacting centreline macrosegregation and support the need for numerical studies as a cost-effective alternative to exhaustive experimental trials.
