Abstract

Language:

Coffee roasters traditionally rely on oil fuel, LPG, or electricity, which are becoming limited and costly resources. This study aims to explore the feasibility of utilizing gas produced from biomass gasification as a sustainable and cost-effective alternative for coffee roasting. The research involved modifying an LPG-based horizontal tube coffee roaster to operate on a biomass gasification stove, focusing on key design and operational parameters. The experimental design included variations in tube length, gasification air input rates, coffee bean dimensions, and batch weight. These parameters were assessed based on the final moisture content and color of the roasted coffee beans. The findings reveal that the combustion heat from biomass gasification can effectively replace LPG while achieving roasting qualities comparable to light to medium roasts. Recommendations for enhancing the heat transfer process include expanding the burning area of the gasification stove and adjusting the rotation speed of the roaster to align with the thermal output of the gasification system. These modifications could improve overall roasting performance, supporting the viability of biomass gasification in coffee processing applications.
