Abstract

Language:

Chloridizing roasting of bismuthinite (Bi2S3) with NaCl and O2 has been studied to remove the impurity Bi by volatilization from copper concentrates containing bismuthinite. This research was conducted using mixtures of Bi2S3 and NaCl subjected to different temperature conditions in a horizontal furnace and TGA apparatus, focusing on the variables of temperature, oxygen partial pressure, and NaCl concentration. The chlorination was quantitatively analyzed by weight loss measurement method. XRD results of the calcines reacted for short durations in 21% O2 at temperatures between 850 and 1000 °C revealed the presence of Bi, BiOCl, and Na2SO4, while longer reaction times in similar conditions produced Bi2O3 as a stable phase. The study found that temperature significantly influenced the weight loss fraction of the samples; at 600 and 900 °C in 10.3% oxygen, the maximum weight loss observed was 4% and 20%, respectively. An increase in the oxygen partial pressure negatively impacted the conversion of Bi2S3. Importantly, at normal roasting temperatures (550-700 °C), bismuth volatilization through NaCl roasting was determined to be marginal.
