Pelletizing of Indian chromite ores is more challenging due to their high refractory nature, along with a high Cr/Fe ratio and high MgO content that necessitate elevated firing temperatures, often resulting in low-strength pellets. This study aims to develop cold bonded chromite pellets suitable for smelting in submerged arc furnaces (SAF) using binders that minimize gangue inclusion while ensuring rapid curing. Laboratory pelletizing experiments were conducted to evaluate various binders, leading to the discovery of a composite binder of dextrin and bentonite, which exhibited favorable properties. The cold bonded pellets created with this binder were subjected to low and high temperature testing, revealing resistance to disintegration up to 1200°C. Additionally, pilot-scale arc furnace trials compared the performance of cold bonded pellets to that of conventionally sintered pellets, indicating that cold bonded pellets had a superior smelting rate under the same power input, along with reduced chromium loss to slag. These findings demonstrate the potential benefits of cold bonded chromite pellets in ferrochrome production.
