Abstract

Language:

Caricaceae papaya species, commonly known as papaya or pawpaw, is renowned for its sweetness and numerous health benefits. This review investigates the active compounds found in various parts of the papaya plant, including fruits, leaves, barks, roots, and by-products such as seeds and peels, all of which contain phytochemicals with significant nutritional value. The study aims to evaluate different extraction methods for these compounds, emphasizing the effectiveness of both conventional and non-conventional techniques. Results indicate that the most suitable extraction methods vary among the different parts of the plant: solvent extraction is optimal for papaya peels and leaves, while microwave-assisted extraction works best for the pulp, and ultrasound-assisted extraction is ideal for seeds. The findings underscore the diverse phytochemical profile of papaya and the importance of selecting appropriate methods tailored to each part of the plant to maximize the extraction of beneficial compounds. This paper highlights the potential of utilizing papaya by-products and contributes to the understanding of its viability as a source of bioactive substances.
