The implementation of stringent regulations and the International Cyanide Management Code (ICMC) aims to prevent environmental incidents associated with cyanidation plants. Many operations are adopting cyanide recovery or destruction processes to meet discharge requirements. In Australia, reporting all cyanide used in gold recovery is mandated by the National Pollution Inventory (NPI). This study assesses the deportment of cyanide in gold processing operations, especially those dealing with sulphide ores, which increasingly replace diminishing oxide ore bodies. Various problematic sulphide minerals consume oxygen and cyanide during cyanidation. Analytical techniques such as atomic adsorption spectroscopy and ion chromatography are employed to quantify metal cyanides, thiocyanate, and cyanate in cyanide solutions. Traditional on-site analyses for 'free' and weak acid dissociable cyanide (WAD) do not suffice, necessitating samples be sent for extensive laboratory analysis. The understanding of the chemical behaviors of cyanide and its reaction products is pivotal, as most destruction methods using sulphur compounds remain under-explored in the literature. Enhanced knowledge of sulfur species alongside cyanide is vital in clarifying the chemical processes in gold processing plants and will likely inform better management practices and regulatory compliance.
