This study investigates the process of liquid-liquid extraction to determine the distribution coefficient and mass transfer coefficient with an aqueous phase serving as the continuous medium. The objective was to conduct simple experiments that elucidate the principles of solubility and separation techniques. The methodology involved two main experiments; the first used a separator funnel to separate solutions of different densities and solubility, followed by titration using 0.1M NaOH, with resulting distribution coefficients of 3.36, 2.70, and 1.88 for varying volumes of propionic acid. The second experiment employed a liquid-liquid extraction column to obtain feed, raffinate, and extract samples, which were then titrated with both 0.1M and 0.025M NaOH. The mass transfer coefficients were calculated as 0.242 mol/Lmin for 0.1M NaOH and 0.662 mol/Lmin for 0.025M NaOH. The results confirm the successful execution of the experiments, highlighting the efficiency of liquid-liquid extraction techniques in chemical laboratories.
