Abstract

Language:

Poland's hard coal mining sector faces significant challenges due to dynamic economic changes and increasing uncertainty surrounding its future. This study aims to analyze the evolving geological and mining conditions impacting the industry as it adapts to both national and European Union climate regulations, particularly concerning greenhouse gas emissions. A thorough examination of the current mining landscape reveals the detrimental effects of falling global coal prices and escalating operational costs, which alongside the depletion of accessible resources and deteriorating mining conditions, are contributing to the industry's declining profitability. Factors such as increased mining depths, rising temperatures, lengthening transportation routes, and a higher incidence of operational hazards exacerbate these challenges. Additionally, the Polish energy mix, predominantly driven by hard coal and lignite, is seeing a gradual shift towards renewable energy sources, thereby complicating the sector's long-term sustainability. Results indicate that while the mining industry remains crucial for Poland's energy independence, with a relatively low reliance on imported energy, persistent restructuring efforts are necessary to enhance economic efficiency and adapt to the evolving market landscape.
