In this study, cauliflower-like cadmium sulfide (CdS) microspheres composed of nanocrystals were successfully synthesized using a hydrothermal method with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as a template coordination agent. The objective was to explore the effect of PEG chain length on the size and structural properties of the CdS microspheres. A variety of characterization techniques, including powder X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), were employed to analyze the samples. The results indicated that the size of the CdS microspheres could be tailored by modifying the length of the PEG chains, with the microspheres maintaining a cubic structure confirmed by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Morphological studies revealed the cauliflower-like structure, attributed to the self-assembly of CdS nanocrystals around a polymer-Cd2+ complex framework. Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the stoichiometric ratio of Cd and S at approximately 1:1, indicating high-purity CdS. Additionally, diffuse reflectance spectrum (DRS) analyses showed that increasing PEG lengths enhanced the band gap value of the CdS microspheres. These findings suggest potential applications of the synthesized CdS microspheres in photocatalytic degradation studies and sensor technologies.
