Electrocoagulation is one of the important treatment methods used to remove colloids from wastewater. Dyestuffs are the leading source of colloids in wastewaters. Dyestuffs, which are used extensively in the textile industry, become important colloidal pollutants for the receiving water environments, given the increased amount of water used by the industry. In this study, the effect of molecular weight of pollutant colloids on the removal efficiency of electrocoagulation was investigated by using two different textile dyes with varying molecular weights. The experiments were conducted in a reactor with aluminum electrodes, and the removal efficacy at different pH values was also examined. The results indicated that the larger molecular weight dye was more significantly affected by pH increase, with Reactive Black 39 (1021.16 g/mol) showing a drop from 100% to 74.83%, while Remazol Red 3B (674.10 g/mol) was affected to a lesser extent, decreasing from 96.54% to 83.01%. This study provides insights into the relationship between molecular weight and dye removal efficiency in the electrocoagulation process.
