Abstract

Language:

Engineers, designers, and specifiers must understand the corrosiveness of the environmental conditions they work in to select suitable materials, coatings, fasteners, and other items exposed to the exterior. A recognized challenge lies in identifying the appropriate corrosivity environments which directly influences the selection of effective corrosion protection without incurring unnecessary costs from over-protection. In response to this issue, AS 4312, Atmospheric Corrosivity Zones in Australia, was developed to standardize corrosivity zones applicable to various corrosion protection materials and coatings. This standard aims to streamline the selection process for products and ensure the availability of accurate, up-to-date data. The paper outlines the new standard, its contents, and practical applications, asserting that it is unique in the global context. It is anticipated that this standard will enhance awareness of atmospheric corrosivity across various fields, thereby guiding specifiers and users in the selection of optimal materials, coatings, and corrosion protection systems.
