This study investigates the electrochemical reduction of nitroaromatic compounds in simulated munitions wastewater and pinkwater. The primary objective is to determine the kinetic rates of reduction for RDX and HMX using a bench-scale electrochemical batch reactor, which revealed low rate constants. Subsequently, continuous flow experiments on a modified pilot-scale reactor showed very low reductions of DNT. However, batch simulation experiments indicated a mass balance of 60 to 90 percent, with many intermediates found in solid form. Building on these findings, continuous flow experiments on the pilot-scale reactor achieved an approximately 80 percent reduction of DNT, and subsequent mass balance studies indicated nearly 100 percent with a significant portion of intermediates also in the solid phase. These results demonstrate the potential effectiveness of the pilot-scale reactor for treating nitroaromatics in industrial wastewater applications.
