This study investigates the leaching effect of uranium from ground phosphate rock using an alkaline solution, aiming to enhance extraction efficiency. The methodology involved applying X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and e-spectrometric analyses to characterize the solid fraction. Results indicated that while the extraction yield was poor, significant quantities of uranium and carbonate were retrieved from the mineral francolite, which contains uranium in different oxidation states (+4 and +6). This research highlights the complexity of uranium compounds present in phosphatic minerals and emphasizes the potential for utilizing alkaline leaching as a method for uranium decontamination in the phosphate fertilizer industry. The findings suggest that although traditional methods are employed for uranium extraction, an improved alkaline leaching approach offers a cost-effective alternative, warranting further investigation into its application for reducing radioactive contamination in phosphate derivatives.
