This work reports on the effect of pH on the biosorption of gold by GOLDBIOSORB, a biosorbent developed from a dead macro fungus. A comparison with published data establishes it as a potential candidate with a high biosorptive uptake of gold. The effect of pH on gold uptake has been examined in relation to gold speciation and the surface charge of the biosorbent. Maximum uptake occurred at pH 3.9. An analysis of the zeta potential profile of the biosorbent together with gold speciation has been effectively employed to explain the effect of pH on biosorption. Charge reversal of the biosorbent which occurs at about pH 1.85 accounts for the decline in uptake below pH 2, and the formation of hydroxide-chloride complexes of gold above pH 4 appears to be responsible for reduced uptake.
