The purification or generally separation processes play a major role in the chemical, petrochemical, and oil and gas industries. This work aims to outline the fundamental principles governing mass transfer, which serves as the skeleton for various separation or purification processes. The methodology involves discussing the essential units of separation, including absorption, distillation, extraction, and drying, along with the driving forces facilitating mass transfer, such as concentration and temperature gradients. The results demonstrate that the application of Fick's first law of diffusion alongside thermodynamic principles regarding phase equilibria can effectively inform the design and optimization of these processes. In particular, the interaction of various phases and the impact of contact processes, including crosscurrent, countercurrent, and concurrent flow, are critically evaluated. This comprehensive overview establishes a foundational understanding for chemical engineers about the complexities in the design of purification systems, aiming at improved efficiency in industrial applications.
