The investigation focuses on leaching of copper (2 wt%), cobalt (0.5 wt%) and iron (2.4 wt%) from complex tailings material from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The objective was to recover copper and cobalt through leaching processes, specifically via direct leaching with sulphuric acid and pre-reduction with coal. Methodology involved analyzing various leaching conditions and characterizing the samples using atomic absorption spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy techniques. Results indicated that the highest recovery of copper and cobalt into the leach solution was 78% and 10%, respectively, under direct leaching; however, higher recoveries of 90% for copper and 96% for cobalt were attained when the sample was pre-reduced at temperatures between 700 to 950 °C for 1.5 hours. The increased recoveries were attributed to the metallization of copper and cobalt in the silicate matrix. The study also highlighted the critical influence of pre-reduction temperature and carbon weight ratios on recovery efficiency and the reduction of iron content in the leach solution.
