The increasing scarcity of conventional natural materials coupled with environmental concerns necessitates the exploration of alternative materials for sustainable infrastructure development. This study reviews the potential of various industrial waste materials as substitutes for traditional construction materials. Given India's extensive industrial network, the generation of significant quantities of waste and by-products provides an opportunity to mitigate pollution and disposal challenges by integrating these materials into civil engineering applications. The research evaluates numerous industrial waste types for their suitability in constructing rural roads, embankments, and subgrade layers. Key physical, chemical, and geotechnical properties of these materials are analyzed to assess their viability as construction resources. The findings reveal that many waste materials possess substantial potential for use in embankment construction and road building. Notably, materials such as steel furnace slag and zinc slag have shown effective performance as partial replacements for aggregates in constructing sub-base and base layers, suggesting a promising avenue for resource utilization in road infrastructure projects.
