This paper discusses the significance and resources of precious metals, focusing on platinum group metals (PGM) which include platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium, osmium, and ruthenium. The objective is to highlight the importance of both primary and secondary sources of these metals, particularly in modern technological applications beyond traditional uses in jewelry. Methodologically, the study examines the occurrences, abundances, and applications of precious metals, emphasizing their role in industries such as automotive catalysis, electronics, and medical sciences. The results reveal that while the production of PGM predominantly comes from primary sources located in regions like South Africa, Russia, and Canada, there is a growing reliance on secondary sources, including obsolete electronic scraps and spent catalytic converters, which often contain higher concentrations of precious metals than natural ores. This dynamic illustrates the evolving demand for precious metals in various technologies and the potential for recycling efforts to meet this demand. The paper underscores the necessity of sustainable practices in the extraction and recycling of these valuable resources.
