Chalcopyrite, as the most abundant copper mineral, poses significant challenges in leaching due to its resistance, particularly under oxidative conditions at lower temperatures where passive layers form on its surface. This research aims to address the difficulties associated with low-grade copper deposits, as traditional smelting techniques are often economically unviable. The study reviews various methods developed for processing copper sulfide ores and concentrates, emphasizing the need for advanced technologies that can effectively treat chalcopyrite concentrates. It highlights the advantages of hydrometallurgical processes, which mitigate environmental issues like SO2 emissions associated with conventional smelting. Despite the efforts made from 1970 to 1995 in establishing pilot plants for these hydrometallurgical processes, many were unfortunately abandoned shortly after their implementation. This work not only surveys existing literature and technological advances but also explores future prospects for improving copper extraction from chalcopyrite. Ultimately, it aims to foster a better understanding of the technological and economic aspects necessary for replacing outdated smelting methods with innovative solutions for low-grade copper ore processing.
