This paper discusses the complex nature of corrosion processes affecting structural steelwork, emphasizing the intricate relationship between various environmental factors and corrosion rates. The objective is to shed light on how different factors influence corrosion and the effectiveness of protective measures. Methodologically, the study outlines fundamental concepts related to corrosion mechanisms, including the role of electrolytes, moisture sources, and environmental aggressiveness. The first part of the paper details the essential characteristics of corrosion, revealing how simple conditions, such as humidity and rainfall, can dramatically alter corrosion rates. Conversely, the second part examines various coating strategies employed to mitigate corrosion, particularly in abrasive environments. Results indicate that while traditional understanding associates increased rainfall with heightened corrosion, in urban areas affected by pollutants, rain can actually inhibit corrosion due to its cleansing effects on surfaces. This nuanced understanding of corrosion dynamics provides valuable insights for engineers and corrosion specialists in developing effective protection strategies for steel structures.
