This thesis investigates the extraction of lithium from spodumene, focusing on different heating methods to optimize the process. The objective is to develop a less energy-intensive acid roasting method using microwaves in comparison to traditional techniques. The study employs a systematic approach, where spodumene concentrate with high purity sourced from Greenbushes, Western Australia, is subjected to varying temperatures ranging from 800 to 1100 °C for different durations in a muffle furnace. Through X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, the mineralogical changes were tracked, revealing the formation of new phases: the γ phase emerged at 950 °C after 30 minutes, while β-spodumene appeared after 2 hours at 1100 °C. The transformation from monoclinic α to hexagonal γ and ultimately tetragonal β-spodumene was observed, along with accompanying changes in physical properties, notably the reduction in particle size and specific gravity. These changes occur through contraction during the conversion to γ-spodumene and subsequent expansion leading to cracking and dispersion of particles into smaller sizes. This work contributes to understanding the extraction process's efficiency, aiming towards more sustainable lithium recovery methods.
