The expansion of wind energy has progressed rapidly in recent years, with global installed capacity tripling since 2014, surpassing 1 TW in 2023. This editorial aims to review the most recent developments and future perspectives of wind power generation as presented in scientific literature. Various factors contribute to the growing popularity of wind energy, including the urgent need for renewable energy sources, advancements in wind turbine technology, and increased investment. The editorial discusses five crucial topics vital for the continued development of both onshore and offshore wind energy. It emphasizes the importance of accurately assessing wind potential, which is hierarchically divided into resource potential, geographical potential, technical potential, and economic potential, all of which exhibit spatial and temporal variations. The need for enhanced validation of wind resource assessments, the inclusion of social and political factors, and the consideration of design improvements for turbines are highlighted as necessary steps for ensuring effective and sustainable wind energy growth. Overall, the rapid advancements in technology and the increased attention on environmental impacts present both opportunities and challenges for the future of wind energy generation.
