Abstract

Language:

In this paper, we explore the historical significance of Luigi Galvani's contributions to the understanding of animal electricity, a concept he pioneered in the late 18th century. The objective is to clarify Galvani's role in the development of this field and to distinguish his interests from those of his contemporary, Alessandro Volta. We employ a comprehensive review of historical texts and scientific literature to analyze the evolution of the concept of animal electricity and its reception among peers. The results indicate that while Volta may have overshadowed Galvani in the narrative of physics, Galvani's work laid the foundation for future research in physiology. Notably, despite advancements by other scientists such as Matteucci and Du Bois-Reymond in the 19th century, the idea of animal electricity faced skepticism and criticism without conclusive evidence. It can be concluded that Galvani's contributions and the influential discourse surrounding animal electricity were essential for establishing its importance in scientific inquiry, even if the acceptance of this concept fluctuated over time.
