This study investigates the sex-specific association between fasting plasma glucose and serum selenium levels in adults from southern Mexico. The objective was to explore whether there are differences between men and women in how selenium levels affect fasting plasma glucose. Using a cross-sectional design, blood samples from a diverse cohort of adults were analyzed for serum selenium and fasting plasma glucose levels. The results indicated a significant interaction between sex and serum selenium levels regarding fasting plasma glucose, suggesting that the relationship between these two variables is more pronounced in one sex compared to the other. In females, higher serum selenium levels were correlated with lower fasting plasma glucose levels, while this association was weaker in males. These findings emphasize the need for a sex-specific approach to understanding the metabolic roles of selenium and its implications for glucose metabolism. The outcomes of this research could inform targeted nutritional interventions and healthcare strategies aimed at improving metabolic health in the population studied.
