Cyanide leaching in precious metals extraction has come under intense public and regulatory scrutiny due to high-profile tailings dam failures and cyanide spills worldwide. This paper argues that, while the debate over whether such criticism is fully justified is not addressed, the perception problem is severe and persists because the industry continues to rely on outdated practices. It emphasizes that proven technologies to recover and destroy cyanide, as well as to handle tailings more safely, have been available and commercially demonstrated for over a decade but are still underutilized. The author reviews existing options for cyanide destruction (such as the INCO SO₂/air process and other chemical, biological, and catalytic methods), cyanide recovery systems, and various approaches to tailings management including heap leach rinsing, paste backfill, conventional tailings ponds, and stacked/dewatered tailings. The paper further notes economic and institutional barriers that favor familiar technologies over safer innovations, even when the latter may present lower overall risk. It concludes by calling for a break in this cycle and illustrates one alternative approach through INNOVAT’s patented continuous vat leaching system as an example of emerging technology that could significantly reduce environmental risk.
