Abstract

Language:

Stress corrosion cracking and hydrogen cracking are critical forms of environmental cracking that can lead to significant failures in sectors such as oil and gas, pipeline, and various other industries. This paper aims to delineate the differences and similarities between these two forms of cracking while focusing specifically on metals and environments, particularly steels in sulphide environments, where misconceptions frequently arise. The methodology employed involves a comprehensive review of the copious data available concerning the nature, forms, causes, and preventative measures related to cracking, including an analysis of sulphide stress cracking that notably initiates at the metal surface. The outcomes reveal distinct mechanisms and conditions conducive to both cracking types, substantiated by a literature case study illustrating occasions of confusion between stress corrosion and hydrogen cracking. By elaborating on these complexities, the paper aims to clarify the misconceptions prevalent in technical discussions surrounding these failure modes.
