The study focuses on evaluating soil quality in a polluted area resulting from abandoned mining activities in Certej, Deva County, Romania. The primary objective is to assess the pollution and bioavailability indexes of various toxic metals such as cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn). A combination of pseudototal and mobile form analyses was conducted on soil samples, and the results were correlated with vegetation samples collected during a previous study. The methodology employed both laboratory tests to determine metal mobility and comparative analysis with previous data. Results indicated significant mobility for Ni, Pb, and Zn, with moderate mobility for Cd. This research highlights the environmental implications of past mining activities and the potential risks associated with metal contamination in soils. Additionally, it addresses the importance of pH levels in influencing metal solubility and mobility in soils, emphasizing the need for ongoing monitoring and remediation strategies in affected areas.
