Abstract

Language:

TOUGHREACT is a numerical simulation program for chemically reactive non-isothermal flows of multiphase fluids in porous and fractured media, developed by integrating reactive chemistry into the multiphase fluid and heat flow simulator TOUGH2 V2. The first version was released in August 2004 through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Science and Technology Software Center (ESTSC) and has become one of its most requested codes. TOUGHREACT has been widely applied in research areas such as CO2 geological sequestration, nuclear waste isolation, geothermal energy development, and environmental remediation, with recent applications expanding into petroleum-related studies. Herein, major enhancements introduced in Version 2 of TOUGHREACT are delineated, including various new capabilities. Two illustrative application examples are presented: (1) the long-term behavior of injected CO2 in storage reservoirs and (2) the biogeochemical cycling of metals in sediments impacted by mining activities. These developments underscore the program’s versatility and effectiveness in modeling complex subsurface reactions and transport phenomena.
