This review examines the characteristics, research advances, and application perspectives of ionic liquid-based electrolytic aluminum deposition, contrasting it with the traditional Hall–Héroult method. The study discusses the reaction conditions and production processes involved with ionic liquids while addressing existing challenges within the aluminum electrolysis industry. Notably, the ionic liquid-based method enables the electrolytic aluminum reaction to occur at reduced temperatures, significantly lowering energy consumption to near theoretical minimum levels. Furthermore, this method effectively eliminates harmful emissions such as CO2 and HF, marking it as a greener alternative for producing electrolytic aluminum. Looking ahead, the paper emphasizes the need for further investigations into the implementation of ionic liquid electrolytes, which will help establish necessary technical criteria and pave the way for integrating this innovative approach into current practices.
