Corrosion is a pervasive phenomenon affecting various sectors of society, with significant economic implications. This lecture provides an overview of corrosion, outlining its definitions, types, and the environments in which it occurs. The objective is to establish a foundational understanding of corrosion as a deterioration process of metals and alloys due to electrochemical interactions with their surroundings. The methodology involves a qualitative analysis of existing literature and statistical data to illustrate the economic losses caused by corrosion, estimated at 3.5% of the GDP in India and around 300 billion dollars annually in the US. Results indicate that corrosion affects not only the structural integrity of infrastructures such as highways and bridges but also poses serious safety and environmental risks. The lecture emphasizes the critical need for awareness and timely management strategies to mitigate corrosion-related failures and highlights the importance of revising corrosion definitions to encompass microbially-influenced factors for a comprehensive understanding of the issue.
