This study investigates the radioactive disequilibrium and the geochemical processes associated with uranium leaching from gold tailings dumps in the Witwatersrand Basin. The objective of the research was to assess the extent of uranium contamination and the mechanisms facilitating its leaching. A combination of field sampling, laboratory analysis, and geochemical modeling was employed to evaluate the behavior of uranium in the tailings environment. The findings revealed significant concentrations of uranium in the leachate and surrounding environmental matrices, indicating that leaching from tailings is a substantial concern for ecological health. The modeling results further suggested that various geochemical interactions contribute to the mobility of uranium, reinforcing the need for effective monitoring and management strategies for contaminated sites. This research highlights the implications of mining activities on environmental health and the necessity for comprehensive assessments in the ongoing management of mining wastes.
