The content of sodium in molten aluminium during electrolysis of the molten system Na3AlF6–NaCl–Al2O3 was investigated at temperatures of 750, 890, and 1000°C, with corresponding measurements of the cathodic overvoltage. It was found that experimental data on cathodic overvoltage aligned closely with the predicted values based on sodium concentrations in molten aluminium, revealing that saturation with sodium was not achieved using a cryolite-based electrolyte. However, using a eutectic mixture of NaF–NaCl as the electrolyte successfully led to sodium saturation in liquid aluminium at temperatures ranging from 710 to 960°C, both below and above the boiling point of sodium at atmospheric pressure. The results were analyzed through a thermodynamic model, thereby contributing valuable insights into the impacts of sodium's presence as an impurity in aluminium production and elucidating the thermodynamic relationships involved.
