The extraction of nickel (Ni) from sulfide resources commences with flotation to produce a concentrate which is then smelted to create a nickel-enriched phase called matte, further refined to produce pure Ni products along with by-products such as cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), and precious metals. Despite the technological robustness of the traditional concentrate smelting-matte refining process, it is capital intensive and is hindered by several environmental and technical challenges, including sulfur dioxide emissions, suboptimal cobalt recovery, and processing difficulties with concentrates high in magnesia and arsenic, requiring appropriate blending with high-grade concentrates to mitigate these issues. In contrast, the direct hydrometallurgical processing of nickel sulfide concentrates and whole ores presents a prospective solution to these challenges, offering several advantages over conventional pyrometallurgical methods. This review examines the historical and current piloted processes and commercial operations in direct leaching, highlighting innovations and advancements in hydrometallurgy that promise to enhance nickel extraction efficiency while addressing environmental concerns.
