This study addresses the pressing environmental and economic challenges associated with the disposal and treatment of metal bearing sludges, particularly those generated from electroplating industries in Malaysia. The objective of the research was to explore more sustainable methods for the recovery of copper from electroplating sludge, which typically contain high concentrations of copper hydroxide and other heavy metals. A leaching procedure was adopted due to its cost-effectiveness and high potential for solubilising copper ions. Comprehensive analysis of the sludge revealed a copper concentration of 90,644 ppm, significantly exceeding that of natural copper ores. Experimental parameters were carefully controlled to minimize the co-dissolution of contaminant metals during the copper recovery process. The results indicated that optimal dissolution ranges were established for various metals, thus ensuring minimal interference with copper extraction. The findings highlight the importance of adopting environmentally friendly approaches to metal recovery, laying the groundwork for future advancements in sludge treatment methodologies.
