This paper provides an informative recap of the fundamental concepts surrounding power factor and reactive power in electrical engineering. The objective is to elucidate the significance of power factor, particularly concerning the relationship between voltage and current in various circuit types. The methodology involves analyzing purely resistive, inductive, and capacitive loads, highlighting the phase relationships of voltage and current in each case. Detailed mathematical equations portray these relationships, illustrating how current lags or leads voltage in different scenarios. Results indicate that a system with a power factor significantly less than unity indicates poor maintenance, while clearly detailing the calculation of power factor as the ratio of average power of the load to the average power of a purely resistive power. It is also emphasized that the power factor in a sinusoidal waveform can be calculated as cosφ. The discussion concludes with the importance of understanding power factor in the context of designing electrical machines and maintaining robust power systems.
