The article reports the chemical characteristics of acid mining drainage waters as well as the results of leaching experiments conducted with Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans under the same conditions in solution. The experiments were realized using tailing impoundment sediments and ore minerals from the Sb-(Au-) base metal deposit Pezinok (Malé Karpaty Mts., Western Carpathians, Slovakia). The research study shows the oxidation sequence and leaching progression on the surface of various ore minerals: löllingite, arsenopyrite, stibnite, native Sb, gudmundite, berthierite, pyrite, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite. The differences between chemical and biological-chemical leaching activity of these ore minerals on polished sections surface are discussed. The extent and kinetics of the biological-chemical leaching of ore minerals are significantly higher than the chemical leaching of ore minerals without bacteria.
