Abstract

Language:

The course PC4306 in Physical Metallurgy is designed to impart knowledge on principles of alloy design, phase diagrams, and the various strengthening mechanisms applicable to different metals and alloys. The primary objective is to explore the fundamental aspects of heat treatment processes and their effects on properties and practical applications of materials. The methodology includes a detailed examination of phase changes in unary and binary systems, significant phase diagrams including those relevant to metallic and ceramic systems, and various solidification mechanisms. Additionally, the course covers essential concepts like TTT and CCT diagrams, conventional heat treatment techniques such as annealing and hardening, and the role of alloying elements in enhancing the characteristics of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. The results highlight the importance of understanding microstructural changes, grain size effects, and the role of heat treatment in determining the mechanical properties of materials. The insights gained from this course are crucial for the application of physical metallurgy in engineering contexts.
