This study investigated the extraction of gold from pyrite cinders by means of chlorination at high temperature using calcium chloride as the chlorinating agent. The most favorable chlorinating conditions providing for enhanced gold recovery were experimentally determined by varying the test parameters; in particular: temperature and time of roasting, flow rate of argon and oxygen, particle sizes of cinders, oxygen partial pressure, and amount of calcium chloride. Under optimum conditions (1200°C, 60 min, flow rate (Ar+O2) 50 l/g+ h, P02=0.3 atm, particle size -140+200 mesh and a CaCl2: cinder ratio=6:1), 99% gold recovery was achieved. This work demonstrated the feasibility of gold extraction from Greek pyrite (Olympias) through chlorination in the presence of oxygen. The study highlights the significance of process variables in optimizing gold recovery from refractory ore sources, thus contributing to advancements in metallurgical extraction techniques.
