Laboratory investigations have been undertaken to determine the influence of major parameters on the leaching process of metal values from ocean polymetallic nodules using model “sea-water,” specifically acidified chloride solutions. The study examined the effects of various leaching conditions, including time, temperature, stirring rate, liquid/solid ratio, and HCl concentration on leaching efficiency. The results indicated that the concentration of hydrochloric acid significantly impacts the leaching of metals from ocean nodules. Notably, at an HCl concentration exceeding 4.0 M and a temperature of 30 °C, nearly all valuable metals were effectively leached from the feed. Additionally, raising the leaching temperature allowed for a reduction in the initial HCl concentration required for effective leaching. This study also highlighted that the deep-sea nodules exhibited unique leaching behaviors that differ from previously reported findings in the literature. These results provide crucial insights into the extraction processes for metals from marine resources, addressing the growing exploration for alternative mineral sources in light of land-based resource depletion.
